Cleaning up the streets of Beacon Avenue S from Myrtle to Cloverdale has never been so fun! With supplies and tools provided by the Seattle Public Utilities' Adopt-A-Street program, Beacon United Methodist Church scheduled four successful clean-up dates in 2011, inviting members within our congregation and throughout our local neighborhood to participate.
Families, including youth and children came to help out, even on days when the weather was questionable. Dressed up in safety vests, gloves, and equipped with trash grabbers, the clean-up teams were sent out into the streets and sidewalks with a mission: "Pick up all trash and items that could be recycled or composted."
Old food and wrappers were common to find next to the neighborhood stores, and the nearby bus stops were often surrounded by cigarette butts. Other interesting items retrieved were hub caps, clothing, and an old shopping cart. A queensize mattress and dead animal were both found lying in the median of the main street, which the group was able to report to Seattle Public Utilities.
